Doctor-led nutrition advice for an ultra-processed world.
Understand how food interacts with your body, not another rule about tracking calories or macros.
Laz is an award-winning, GMC-registered doctor training in anaesthetics within the NHS, and is qualified as a personal trainer and nutrition coach. His aim is, in theory, simple: get as much accurate nutrition information in front of as many people as possible.
Working across A&E, medical wards, intensive care and anaesthetics has shown him the scale of the diet-related disease crisis up close. It's also taught him something else: a treatment that works in theory doesn't mean much if it doesn't work in practice. No treatment works if patients aren't actually taking it, so any real solution has to account for the challenges people face day to day.
Something as fundamental as human nutrition needs a narrative that actually makes sense, and a few actionable principles that don't demand a huge amount of bandwidth. That's why Laz isn't an advocate for complex calorie or macro counting, and why he doesn't vilify any single food group, fat or carbs included.
His focus is instead on how your body interacts with food, and how, through eating whole foods, your body's natural fullness mechanisms can work with you rather than against you.
Understand your body. The rest gets easier.
No macronutrient is the enemy. No perfect number of calories to hit. Just a clearer understanding of how food and your body actually work together.
One talk, told as a story
Beyond Calories: a doctor's guide to eating in an ultra-processed world, adaptable from 20 to 60 minutes for medical schools, workplaces, and public science events.
It isn't preaching the latest diet fad, and it isn't making nutrition endlessly complicated. It's a story, told in four parts.
-
1
How our physiology evolvedHow the body learned to pull just the right amount of energy from its environment, and stay nourished enough to survive.
-
2
An industry spots an opportunityHow the ultra-processed food industry found ways to undermine that system, for profit.
-
3
Keeping us believing it's our faultThe tactics used to keep us thinking we're the ones who failed.
-
4
Taking back controlWhat we can actually do about it, in a way that holds up long term.
Recent audiences include medical schools, NHS trusts and public events across the UK.
